Plussulien

We had a break in Plussulien to visit a neighbour who move to France several years ago now. The commune is small with a population of around 500, and it has a church, a friendly bakery and a cosy pub. The local expat community was very welcoming and always ready to help.

Plussulien is home to the archaeological site of Quelfénnec, discovered in 1964 by retired French Historian Charles-Tanguy Le Roux, excavation of the site started upon discovery and continued until 1976. The site is a dolerite quarry which was exploited in the Neolithic period, from 3500BC to 1800BC, for the production of polished stone tools. The production is estimated at 5,000 axes per year, various other tools besides axes were produced and widely exported. Quelfennec’s axes have been found throughout western France (from Normandy to Languedoc), but also in North-West Europe, the British Isles, and Belgium.
