Hautot‑sur‑Mer, Lakeside Luxury, Cliffside Wandering, and a Surprise Petting Zoo
Our Hautot‑sur‑Mer stopover delivered a lakeside pitch with goats and sheep, a beach just a short walk away, and chalk cliffs reminiscent of Dover. A calm, scenic Normandy break with plenty of campervan charm.
Hautot‑sur‑Mer isn’t the kind of place that shouts for attention — it just quietly sits on the Normandy coast being gorgeous, and lets you discover it at your own pace. It’s a small commune just south of Dieppe, known for its dramatic chalk cliffs, peaceful beaches, and countryside calm. Basically, the kind of place where your campervan immediately feels like it’s on holiday.
We rolled in expecting a nice campsite. What we got was chef’s kiss levels of perfection.
A Campsite Straight Out of a Postcard
Our pitch was directly on a lake. Not “near” a lake. Not “with lake views.”
On. The. Lake.
Open the campervan door and boom, water complete with Ducks, ripples and serenity. And then, on the island in the middle of the lake, the pièce de résistance: goats and sheep living their best island‑life, like tiny farmyard castaways. Along with a whole manner of birdlife.
They wandered around nibbling grass, occasionally staring at us as if to say, “Yes, we live here". "No, you may not join our island commune.” It was impossible not to smile every time we looked out the window.
If every campsite came with its own petting‑zoo archipelago, we’d never go home.

A Walk to the Beach (Because It Was Basically Next Door)
Once we’d finished admiring the goats’ real estate choices, we headed out on foot as the beach was so close it would’ve been rude not to.
The path took us down the road past open fields until the landscape suddenly opened up into that classic Normandy coastline. Wide beaches, rolling waves, and cliffs that look like they’ve been carved by a giant with a very dramatic flair.

Chalk Cliffs That Could Give Dover a Run for Its Money
The cliffs at Hautot‑sur‑Mer are part of the same chalk belt that runs all the way to the White Cliffs of Dover. And honestly? They’re just as impressive, towering white walls rising above the sea, glowing in the sunlight, and making you feel very small and very lucky to be there.
We wandered along the shoreline, stopping for an ice cream and taking in the views, listening to the waves, and occasionally pretending we were in some BBC nature documentary. The terrain is rugged, beautiful, and unmistakably Normandy.

A Bit of Background: Hautot‑sur‑Mer in a Nutshell
Hautot‑sur‑Mer is a peaceful coastal commune in the Seine‑Maritime department, just a short hop from Dieppe. Historically, it’s been a fishing and farming area, with settlements dating back centuries thanks to its fertile land and strategic coastal position. Today it’s known for its beaches, chalk cliffs, and quiet rural charm, the kind of place French families escape to for weekends of sea air and long walks.
It’s small, understated, and absolutely perfect for a campervan stopover.
Final Thoughts: Hautot‑sur‑Mer, You Unexpected Gem
A lakefront pitch with goats and sheep. A beach within strolling distance. Chalk cliffs that look like Dover’s French cousin. And a calm, coastal atmosphere that makes you forget what day it is.
Hautot‑sur‑Mer didn’t just give us a stopover — it gave us a little pocket of peace, beauty, and gentle seaside magic. Another brilliant chapter in the campervan adventure.
