Before visiting Poitiers we took the opportunity to cycle round the nearby Lac de Saint Cyr and out to the nearby village of Dissay, stopping for luncheon on the banks of the lake as we went. We were pleasantly surprised by the charming village and its surroundings. The main attraction had to be the Chateau de Dissay, a stunning 15th century castle that was once owned by a bishop of Poitiers and was a sight to behold, with its medieval architecture and moat, which was full of very loud croaking frogs (it must be that time of year).
Poitiers is a lovely city in western France, with a lot of history and culture and some beautiful buildings. We enjoyed walking around the old town and were amazed at the large open public spaces. Visiting the medieval town center, the cathedral of Saint-Pierre de Poiters and the Notre-Dame-la-Grande we were blown away by the Romanesque architecture and the colourful paintings. The scale of Palace of Justice just has to be seen.
Poitiers is a beautiful city with a rich history and culture and a great place to visit if you want to experience a bit of French charm.
