Rochefort Corderie Royale

Once off the ferry we were heading for Rochefort, a charming city on the Charente River, where they filmed The Adventures of Tintin and the famous movie Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (although I have not seen either of them).

We learned that Rochefort was founded in the 17th century by Louis XIV as a naval base and that it produced many famous ships, such as the Hermione that carried La Fayette to America, to support the uprising against the British.

We cycled round the Charente River to view the mighty Point Tranbordeur, which is a unique bridge that can transport cars and people across the river using a giant suspended gondola. It’s like a giant elevator that moves sideways and upward. Built in 1898 and it’s still working today, although it’s more of a tourist attraction now that traffic uses the Viaduc de Martrou is operational. Some people say it’s a marvel of engineering, others say it’s a waste of time and money. But, it’s a great photo opportunity.

Once in the city we visited the Royal Rope Works in the Corderie Royal, where they made ropes for the navy, which was one very long building. We even attempted the maze, but with all but one exit gate being closed, it took a bit longer than anticipated. But we enjoyed strolling along the marina and admiring the old buildings and monuments.

Rochefort is a lovely place to discover some of France’s maritime history and culture.
