Le Treport

Le Treport is a small fishing port with a lot of charm and history, with a great beach and surrounded by towering chalk cliffs, very much like the coastal area around Dover. Unlike Dover though these have the remnants of the Gun emplacements from WWII. Le Treport was once called Ulterior Portus by the Romans, which means “the farthest port”. It was a strategic location for trade and defence, but it also suffered from many English invasions over the centuries. In fact, Queen Victoria visited Le Treport twice in the 1840s.

Today, Le Treport is a popular destination for tourists who want to experience the charm and beauty of Normandy. You can stroll along the pebbly beach, take a ride on the funicular railway that connects the town with the cliffs, visit the local fish market and sample some delicious seafood, or try your luck at the casino that was built in 1897.

We intended to sample the local fresh seafood from the Poissonnerie Municipale and after waiting for it open, as the French like their two-hour lunch breaks (rookie mistake), we purchased a whole fresh sea bass and six large scallops to cook on our grill, along with bottle of Sauvignon called Roche Mazet from a local shop on the way back (I know but it was an opportunity too good to pass up).

Funny thing about Le Treport is at the top of the funicular (which is free to use) there is a Pizza vending machine.

(never seen one before)

If you are a fan of police thrillers, you might recognise Le Treport as the location for the series, “Witnesses”.

You can’t beat a late afternoon snooze after a busy day and a sneaky G&T.
