Transforming Our Campervan:

The Adventure of Carpet and Ply Lining

The journey continues and now this time, it’s all about lining the interior with 4 way stretch carpet and ply. Let’s dive into this exciting chapter of our campervan conversion!

The Grand Plan

We decided it was time to give the van’s interior a makeover. Enter carpet and ply lining—a combination that promised to add both style and comfort. Our goal was simple: create a space that felt like home, even on the road.

Gathering Materials

First things first, we gathered all the necessary materials. Ply boards, adhesive, insulation, and, of course, a plush stretch carpet screamed “welcome.” Our shopping list grew as we added essential tools: spray glue, knives and a lot of enthusiasm.

Carpet Lining Magic

Next up was the carpet lining. This part was both exciting and nerve-wracking. Rolling out the carpet and cutting it to fit the contours of the van’s interior required precision and a steady hand. We started in the corners, applying a layer of adhesive and carefully smoothing the carpet into place. Then, we moved on to the doors, ensuring every inch was covered in that soft material.

Insulation Interlude

Before moving on to the ply lining, we took the opportunity to add some more insulation behind the ply boards. This step was crucial for keeping the van cozy in winter and cool in summer. It was a bit like stuffing a giant duvet into the walls—fluffy, slightly awkward, but ultimately very rewarding.

The Ply Lining Process

We started with the pre-cut ply lining kit to fit the Transit Custom. Trimming the boards where necessary was like solving a giant, three-dimensional puzzle. Each piece was carefully measured and trimmed to ensure a snug fit. Once we had all the pieces ready, it was time to secure them in place. With a mix of adhesive and screws, the ply lining began to take shape, transforming the van’s bare metal interior into a smooth, wood-panelled haven.

The Finished Look

The transformation was nothing short of magical. The once cold and industrial van now felt like a inviting space. The combination of ply and carpet lining not only improved the aesthetics but also added insulation and soundproofing, making our van even more comfortable.

Reflections and Revelations

As we stood back to admire our work, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment. The process had its challenges—there were moments of frustration and a few trial-and-error mishaps—but seeing the final result made it all worthwhile. Our campervan was now one step closer to becoming our dream mobile home.
