21 Stops to Bordeaux

It was 21 stops from Bel-Air to Bordeaux on route 404. But due to the schedule of the bus service we would be catching it with the students. After just over an hour of winding through the French countryside, Trish was feeling extremely queasy, when the bus pulled into Stalingrad (I know… you could not make this up). But the treelined terminus and bridge over the wide Garonne River made for a pleasant walk into Bordeaux.

We were curious about the history of this beautiful city and walking through the Porte de Bourgogne arch our destination was Cathédrale Saint-André de Bordeaux, which was the start of our walking tour of this city. On route we came across a car park, with a difference, as there was a car hanging over the edge (such a great way to create a memorable place).

The tour lasted over 2 hours and covered the main sites and streets of the old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, telling us many interesting facts and stories about Bordeaux’s history, culture, and architecture. We saw monuments like the Girondins Monument, the Place de la Comédie, the Saint André Cathedral, and the Porte Cailhau. We also walked along the Garonne River and enjoyed the views of the bridges and the waterfront.

After lunch at the Hotel Intercontinental and some “Shop Seeing” on Europe’s longest shopping street, at 1.2 kilometers long (oh dear), it was soon time to catch 404 back to Bel-Air, and those twisty French roads (Oh if only I had my motorbike).
